AgeCare welcomes seven more newcomers at YVR. The nurses, who have never been to Canada, started their five-plus hour journey to Salmon Arm with a stop at Tim Hortons.
AgeCare Welcomes Foreign Nurses
On December 16, AgeCare proudly welcomed seven more foreign trained nurses to interior BC, offering them a two-year employment contract and assistance with finding accommodations.
Five of the seven newcomers are originally from Philippines, and the other two are from Mexico. All seven – Angeles, Rosa, Noreen, Regine, Adelaida, Ana, and Marlon – are brand new to Canada.
“This is the second of several cohorts of foreign trained workers we hope to attract and retain as valued members of our AgeCare team,” said Todd Bassett, VP of Human Resources. “We are happy to hire from both within and outside of Canada, and when it comes to positions that are more difficult to fill, we work with an agency to expand our talent pool and draw from qualified people all over the world.”
With dense fog making the drive from Vancouver airport to Salmon Arm a bit tricky, Todd softened the experience by treating the new arrivals to a stop at Tim Hortons. They then received a warm welcome from staff and some previous foreign workers at Mount Ida Mews, followed by a welcome reception at a residence in Salmon Arm.
After an orientation, introductions, and an overview of their path to becoming recognized as RN/LPNs in Canada and BC, four of the nurses will be shuttled to AgeCare Monashee Mews in Lumby, two will relocate to AgeCare Cariboo Place in Williams Lake, and one will settle in at AgeCare Mount Ida Mews.
Ringing in the New Year
Our AgeCare sites had variety of activities to help our residents ring in the New Year – let’s take a look!
At AgeCare South Terrace they rang in the New Year with a toast. They coloured new years hats, drank non-alcoholic bubbly, shared New Years’ resolutions and sang Auld Lang Syne!
AgeCare Glenwarren rang in the New year with a lively party and countdown to 2023! The residents enjoyed goodies, decorations, hats and delicious bubbly cider too!
AgeCare Riverview residents rang in the New Year with entertainment by The Checkmate Band and freshly popped popcorn!
Help Prevent The Spread
At AgeCare we understand that it is our responsibilitiy to do all we can to protect ourselves, and the vulnerable people who count on us daily to keep them as safe and well as possible. Vaccines for respiratory illnesses are one of the simplest and most effective ways we can do this.
Thank you to those who recognize the importance of getting vaccinated and have gone out of your way to ensure you have received all the vaccines you are eligible for. Together we will do our part in taking care of ourselves and our communities.
Other ways to help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and Influenza are:
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
Wash hands often with soap and water thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.
Avoid touching your face, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
Stay home if you are feeling unwell.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Let’s all do everything in our power to keep ourselves and our most vulnerable loved ones safe and well!
Individuals 5 years and older can get their Influenza vaccine at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine at participating pharmacies, some community medical clinics and select Alberta Health Services sites.
For more details call 811, or visit a walk-in clinic.
**Additionally, all seniors older than 65 can get a free enhanced Influenza vaccine this year. Enhanced influenza vaccines (FLUZONE® High-Dose Quadrivalent) give seniors better protection against influenza than standard-dose vaccines. Enhanced influenza vaccines stimulate stronger immune responses, compensating for the natural weakening of the immune system that occurs with age.
Visitors Guidelines
While many restrictions have been lifted outside of our community, we wish to reiterate the need for safe, responsible practices in our centres, including continuous masking and hand hygiene. Remember! Help us limit potential exposure to COVID by staying away if you are unwell.
Our recreation team works hard to create engaging activities that enrich the mind, body and spirit. We are continuously looking for ways to reduce the risk of transmission while having the least impact on our residents' well-being.
Please note that communities with an exposure or outbreak may have different recreation restrictions. Contact your community or sign up for email updates to stay informed on the latest information.
